Part-Time Driver
Covington Area Transit System
 
The Covington County Commission is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Driver for the Covington Area
Transit System.  This is a part-time position. Tentative schedule will be Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.
 
Summary of Responsibilities:
 
The part-time driver will work up to 28 hours per week unless additional hours are authorized. Work schedules may vary based on
transportation needs, and drivers must adhere to assigned schedules while notifying the office of any unforeseen disruptions. The
driver will report to the coordinator/director but will work more directly with the dispatcher. Attendance at all required training
sessions mandated by the Alabama Department of Transportation and local county government is necessary. If any job-related
concerns arise, the driver may consult with the coordinator. Ensuring passenger safety is the top priority, and the driver must be
prepared to respond to emergencies both during and outside normal working hours. No tasks that put the driver at risk will be
required. Additionally, the driver will perform any other duties assigned by the coordinator as needed.
 
Duties:
 
  • Transport passengers safely within the county and on occasional trips outside the county, assisting those with boarding or exiting difficulties.
  • Maintain accurate records of mileage, travel time, passenger details, and other required documentation.
  • Conduct mandatory pre-trip inspections, report mechanical issues immediately, and ensure vehicle cleanliness.
  • Perform daily safety checks and report any suspicious items or concerns to office staff.
  • Follow all safe driving procedures and submit required paperwork daily.
  • Refuel the vehicle at the end of each day, but never during contract time or while passengers are on board.
  • Be knowledgeable in using emergency equipment, including fire extinguishers, first-aid kits, emergency flares or triangles, and biohazard kits.
  • Prioritize passenger safety at all times and be prepared to respond to emergency situations as needed.
 
Qualifications:
 
The driver must be in good health and pass a pre-employment drug test. A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is
required, as any history of speeding or traffic violations results in automatic disqualification. Employment is contingent upon
securing a Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) and passing a background check. For vehicles exceeding 15 passengers, a Commercial
Driver’s License (CDL) with a Passenger endorsement is mandatory. The driver must have the ability to complete required records
and reports accurately, read road signs correctly, follow oral and written instructions, and communicate effectively
with passengers. Flexibility in scheduling is necessary to meet public transportation needs. A professional appearance, courteous
demeanor, and the ability to interact politely with the general public are essential. Physically, the driver must be capable of assisting
disabled passengers, securing wheelchairs, and handling vehicle doors and emergency exits. Good eyesight, including true color
perception, and adequate hearing to respond to communication and external noises are required, along with the mobility to bend,
stand, climb, and lift up to 25 pounds. Additionally, the driver should possess a pleasant personality, patience, professionalism,
loyalty, honesty, enthusiasm, and a strong commitment to public transportation.

Building & Grounds Maintenance Worker

 
The Covington County Commission is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Building and Grounds
Maintenance Worker in the Maintenance Department. This is a full-time position.
 
Summary of Responsibilities:
 
The Building and Grounds Maintenance Worker is responsible for performing a variety of maintenance and custodial tasks across
multiple county facilities. Key responsibilities include general building upkeep, such as repairs, cleaning, and maintaining the
appearance and functionality of public spaces. The role may involve work in areas such as plumbing, electrical systems, carpentry,
and other general maintenance tasks to ensure that all county buildings and grounds are safe, clean, and in good working condition.
 
Duties:
  • Perform routine maintenance and custodial tasks in county buildings and on surrounding grounds
  • Conduct minor repairs involving plumbing, electrical systems, and carpentry
  • Ensure the cleanliness and general upkeep of facilities
  • Operate basic maintenance tools and equipment
  • Assist with the setup or breakdown of equipment and furniture as needed
  • Respond to maintenance requests and work orders in a timely manner
  • Safely lift and move items weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Travel between multiple county facilities as required
Qualifications:
 
Applicants must have a minimum of two years of experience in building maintenance or construction and be physically capable of
lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds. Experience in plumbing, electrical work, and carpentry is preferred and considered an asset for
the position. A valid Alabama Driver’s License is required, and candidates must be able to provide references to verify their work
experience. Applicants should also be capable of working independently, following instructions, and adapting to a variety of
maintenance tasks. All employees are subject to drug and alcohol testing as part of the Covington County Commission’s drug-free
workplace policy.

This is a full-time position.
 
Summary of Responsibilities:
 
The Backhoe Operator will be responsible for the operation of heavy machinery, including backhoes, to assist in
various road construction and maintenance tasks throughout Covington County.
 
Duties:
  • Operate backhoe for trenching, digging, and lifting
  • Perform minor equipment maintenance
  • Assist road crew with general labor when not operating machinery
  • Adhere to safety protocols and procedures
  • Complete daily logs and other reports as needed
 
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience operating a backhoe
